The number of terrorists killed in J&K reached over 200 for the first time in seven years after the successful operation in Budgam and Baramulla districts where five terrorists were neutralized.
Director General of Police (DGP), J&K S P Vaid tweeted, “Today by the collective effort of @JmuKmrPolice, Indian Army, @crpfindia, CAPF and people of Kashmir have led to neutralisation of more than 200 terrorists in the year of 2017 alone”
“This marks a huge landmark for establishing peace and stability in the state of J&K and our country,” the DGP added in another tweet.
According to official figures, 200 militants have been killed by the security forces in counter-insurgency operations in eleven months from January to November this year, which is the highest since 2010. In 2010, a total of 270 terrorists were killed.
The number of terrorists killed had dropped to about 100 per year by 2015. In 2016, 165 militants were killed.
With increased terrorist activity this year, civilian casualties have also increased with 54 civilians getting killed this year in terrorist-related violence compared to 14 last year.
However, there has been some positive points of casualties for security forces this year with only 77 security forces killed in terrorist-related incidents this year in J&K, lower than the 88 fatalities in similar incidents witnessed last year.
According to South Asia Terrorism Portal, the number of terrorists killed in 2017 was maximum in the month of June with 30 kills(data upto November 26, 2017).
